Houndstooth Fabric

A classic black and cream-white houndstooth pattern, defined by the repeating, angular, black, tessellated abstracted fang-like teeth forms. The pattern is created using a simple 2 over, 2 under twill weave, alternating bands of 4 light and 4 contrasting dark threads in warp and weft, advancing 1 weft thread each pass to create an offset chequered appearance. Believed to have been created around 3,000 years ago, the pattern was popularised in the 1930s by high-end fashion houses as a more regimented, striking interpretation of the classic fabric pattern inspired by Scottish tweed. Houndstooth is a particularly popular fabric texture for garments ranging from coats, trousers and dresses to hat and suit jacket trims, while it can be used on soft furnishings, rugs using natural yarns, or synthetically recreated as wallpapers to add a particularly striking, bold and expressive element to interior designs. The strength, angularity and contrast of the pattern can hold its own when employed in conversation with other patterns, colours and textures to create a rich tapestry of contrasting or complimentary forms, or as a standalone feature in a timeless, contemporarily classic design.
