Cape Blackwood, also known as Australian Blackwood, is a hardwood timber native to Eastern Australia and Tasmania and was introduced into the indigenous forests of South Africa, specifically the Southern Cape region. Its colour is highly variable with large wavy streaks of contrasting colours. Although called 'blackwood', its colour is not black, instead, the name is thought to refer to the dark stains on the hands of woodworkers caused by the high level of tannins in the timber.
