Vinyl is a man-made texture created by mixing ethylene and chlorine, normally extracted from oil and salt respectively, to create the malleable resin powder PolyVinyl Chloride (PVC), to which colours, dyes and other additives can be mixed to create a variety of patterns, colour schemes and strengths through a compounding process. First invented in the 1920’s, its versatile nature and cost efficient manufacturing process have helped it become one of the most popular plastic-resin products in use. Due to its versatility, it is widely used in medical products and as a finish, trim or to insulate wires and cables in vehicles. This particular vinyl texture can be found in flooring, mats, walls and kitchen and bathroom coverings. It is extremely durable and resistant to moisture, making it well suited to high traffic, humid or wet environments and is particularly easy to clean and sanitise, making it popular for use in a wide range of settings from bathrooms and kitchens to healthcare, clinical, dental, hospital and surgical facilities. Its hard-wearing nature means it is also easily recycled, requiring less crude oil to create a replacement. The limitless finish types, colours, flexibility to stiffness ratios, transparency levels and low cost production make it a popular alternative to natural materials and allow it to be utilised in a wide variety of domestic and commercial environments alike. This vinyl texture has a light blue wash, with a granular appearance courtesy of white, terracotta and burnt orange flecks. There is a distinctive, laid back, art nouveaux feel due to the mixture of pastel, soft blue tones and white patches with free flowing, organic, sinuous shapes creating a gentle, loose, swirling pattern, similar in appearance to sponge painted mood-scapes. The overall light appearance of faded sky blues, whites, light pink and orange hue fragments offset the sea of deeper blues to balance the palate, while complimenting, contrasting and enhancing the subtle accent colours. The variation between blue shades is emphasised in 3 dimensions, where some of the white chips and darker, ocean or navy blues are risen, creating a riven, coarse texture which is particularly useful for adding grip underfoot when utilised as flooring in busy or frequently wet areas, such as shower trays, bathrooms, or entrance lobbies. It is also commonly employed in sanitary, educational, culinary or clinical spaces where spillage of liquids is anticipated, as vinyl is waterproof, easy to clean and, when coarse in texture like asphalt, provides reliable, consistent grip even when wet. The combination of the rougher texture and cloudy, foggy, hazy visual appearance is similar in nature to a sponge-dabbed concrete or render finish, perfect in diffuse lit spaces to create a calming, balanced atmosphere. The muted nature of the colours and the riven texture also reduce the surface’s reflectivity when brightly or unevenly illuminated by sunlight or bright, surgical lighting, providing a light, positive yet matte finish appearance, meaning users can see the surface clearly and evenly regardless of lighting conditions, reducing confusion and the risk of accidents when viewed by visually impaired users. This texture can additionally be used for worktops in areas where a spiritual or elegant, modern look is desired, such as bar tops, tables, kitchen counters and bathroom panelling due to its waterproof nature, bringing a neutral, subtle, cool blue wash to contrast or ground brighter, more vivid colours, or as a neutral, calm, reassuring and atmospheric backdrop, enhanced by natural light and complimenting or accentuating the appearance of soft, light coloured timbers, metals, stone or brick.
